About East Syracuse, New York

The settlement was first named Messina and grew up along the Erie Canal. In the 1870s the New York Central built its main line here. The DeWitt rail yards, once among the busiest in the world, stretched five miles to Minoa. The new village took the name East Syracuse in 1881.

  • Penicillin plantEast Syracuse is home to Bristol Laboratories, once called Cheplin Laboratories. Bristol-Myers bought the plant in 1943 and switched it from acidophilus milk to penicillin production.
