About Eastchester, New York
Eastchester is a town of 34,641 people in southern Westchester County, and the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe lie inside it. Ten families from Fairfield, Connecticut, settled here in 1664 on a deed from Thomas Pell, at the spot where Anne Hutchinson's home had stood some twenty years before. Another 26 families soon followed, and in 1665 the settlers agreed to the Eastchester Covenant, whose 26 provisions covered the schooling of children, the care of property and the support of a minister.
Governor Richard Nicolls confirmed the settlers' patent in 1666. In 1700 they signed a deed with the Native Americans for a tract called Long Reach, which took in today's Bronxville, Tuckahoe and part of Mount Vernon. New Rochelle, Westchester and the Pell family all contested it, but Eastchester won, and Queen Anne granted a second patent in 1708. The railroad reached the farms in the 1840s, and new villages split off: Mount Vernon in 1853, Bronxville in 1898 and Tuckahoe in 1903.
- The 1733 electionOn October 29, 1733, voters met on Eastchester's village green to choose who would fill a vacant New York General Assembly seat, and the contest was bitter. John Peter Zenger reported it at length in his New-York Weekly Journal's first issue, a rare complete record of a colonial election. That story and his later writing brought on his 1735 libel trial, and his acquittal is seen as a foundation of American press freedom.
- Caught in the Neutral GroundWhen the Revolution began, Eastchester was a farming town at the heart of the Neutral Ground. For more than eight years both armies harassed it, along with the raiders called Cowboys and Skinners. The Battle of Pell's Point was fought in 1776 about 1 mile from the old center, and afterward the British used the Church of Eastchester as a military hospital. It is now the Saint Paul's Church National Historic Site.
- From marble schoolhouse to WaverlyThe Marble Schoolhouse, a one-room school, was built in 1835 from Tuckahoe Marble. In 1899 New York chartered the Waverly Union School in the place then known as Upper Tuckahoe, which began the Eastchester Union Free District. Waverly taught every grade until Eastchester High School opened in 1927, stayed an elementary school until 1983, and reopened in 1990 as the Waverly Early Childhood Center.
- A clubhouse for a Town HallAfter Greenvale elementary school opened in 1936, the old Wilmot School on White Plains Road became Eastchester's Town Hall. In 1964 the town moved into the clubhouse of the Oak Ridge Country Club, on land that had first been a farm, and the Wilmot School was torn down.
