About New Rochelle, New York

New Rochelle is a city of 79,726 people in Westchester County, on Long Island Sound. In 1654 the Siwanoy, a band of Lenape, sold land here to the English settler Thomas Pell. About 33 families, many of them craftsmen from La Rochelle in France, founded La Nouvelle-Rochelle in 1688 and named it for their old home. The next year Pell deeded 6,100 acres to the Huguenot settlement, which kept speaking French, so families in nearby towns sent their children there to learn it.

The settlement stayed a small farming village through the 18th century. In 1857 the Village of New Rochelle was formed inside the Town of New Rochelle, and in 1899 Governor Theodore Roosevelt signed a city charter that merged the two. That year Michael J. Dillon narrowly beat Hugh A. Harmer to become the first mayor. Developers then bought up farms and estates for planned neighborhoods such as Rochelle Park, which won the place the nickname "City of Homes," and the population climbed from 14,720 in 1900 to 54,000 in 1930.

  • A fat calf every June 24Thomas Pell's sale came with a condition: each year on June 24, he or his heirs could demand "one fatt calfe." The calf appeared on the half dollar minted in 1937 for the city's 250th anniversary. Pell's descendants never asked for one until the 1950s, and the city has held an occasional calf ceremony ever since.
  • Thomas Paine's farmIn 1784, after the Revolution, New York gave Thomas Paine a farm of about 300 acres here as a reward for his work for independence. The state had taken the land from owners who sided with the Tories. Paine's Cottage, built in 1793, is now a National Historic Landmark, and the site also holds his burial place, a monument and a museum in the Thomas Paine Memorial Building of 1925.
  • The Huguenot churchIn June 1709 most of New Rochelle's founding Huguenot congregation agreed to follow the Church of England's liturgy. King George III granted Trinity its first charter in 1762, and after the Revolution it became an Episcopal parish. Trinity-St. Paul's Episcopal Church stands at Huguenot Street and Division Street, and it joined the National Register in 2006.
  • Movie serials in 1909Edwin Thanhouser started the Thanhouser Film Corporation in New Rochelle in 1909. Its picture The Million Dollar Mystery was among the first serial films, and the city later also became home to Terrytoons Studios.
