About Eastford, Connecticut

Eastford is a town of 1,649 people in Windham County, Connecticut. It began as the east part of Ashford, and in 1777 the General Assembly made that corner a separate parish called Eastford. Its Congregational church was organized on September 23, 1778, and the parish raised the frame of its first meetinghouse the following year.

The rivers soon turned mill wheels. George and Rufus Sprague built a cotton mill at Phoenixville about 1812, and the Phoenix Manufacturing Company put up a stone cotton mill there in 1831. Eastford became a town of its own in 1847 and held its first town meeting on June 21. Its name simply tells where it lies, east of Ashford.

“Eastford is the biggest place of its size on earth.”
A modern history of Windham County, 1920
  • 33 oxen and no liquorIn 1829 the church dedicated a new meetinghouse, and Esquire Benjamin Bosworth bought the old one to turn into a house. A crowd hitched up 33 oxen to drag it down a steep hill, but a chain snapped. The teamsters expected liquor, and Bosworth, a temperance man, refused, so they unhitched. Men from Abington finished the job sober, only to see a storm freeze the building at the bottom of the hill, where it blocked the road all winter.
  • Smith Snow's house of 1806Smith Snow, a Phoenixville mill owner, was said to have changed clothes on his wedding day and gone back to his mill. The house he built for his wife in 1806 became the village Sunday School and the scene of potluck and oyster suppers. At Christmas in 1918, 87 children got gifts, most often hard candy and an orange. The town bought the Union Society of Phoenixville House in 2002, and it joined the National Register in 2007.
  • Ten thousand at a funeralNathaniel Lyon, born on an Eastford farm in 1818, was killed at Wilson's Creek in Missouri in August 1861, the first Union general to die in the Civil War. His body traveled east by train and lay in state in five cities, trailed by pickpockets until Hartford police arrested seven of them. About 10,000 people came to his funeral at the Congregational church, where House Speaker Galusha A. Grow gave the oration.
  • Built by the CCCThe state set up Natchaug State Forest in 1919, and it grew past 12,000 acres by the 1930s. From 1933 to 1941 a Civilian Conservation Corps crew camped in the forest and built its roads and trails. Of the buildings that crew left behind, the best preserved is the Natchaug Forest Lumber Shed on Kingsbury Road, framed with posts and beams and divided into five bays for equipment, and it joined the National Register in 1986.
