About Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Eau Claire is a city of 69,421 people and the seat of Eau Claire County, built where the Eau Claire River flows into the Chippewa. In 1845 Stephen McCann and his partner J. C. Thomas raised three buildings on the spot that is now the heart of downtown. They meant mainly to hold a claim to the land, but the McCann family moved into one of the buildings and became the first permanent settlers.

Two more settlements grew up nearby. West Eau Claire was founded across the river in 1856, close to where the county courthouse stands now, and the Daniel Shaw & Co. lumber company started Shawtown a mile and a half to two miles downstream. Eau Claire became a city in 1872, and its many sawmills had turned it into an industrial city by the late 19th century. Shawtown joined the city by the 1930s.

  • "Here is the clear water!"The name comes from the French Eaux Claires, or Clear Waters, the name of the Eau Claire River. Local legend says French explorers traveling down the Chippewa, muddy after rain, reached the mouth of the clearer stream and called out "Voici l'eau claire!" The phrase is now the city motto and appears on the city seal.
  • From tires to ammunitionGillette Safety Tire Company built a factory on the Eau Claire River in 1917, and by 1920 about 1,600 workers made tires and tubing. United States Rubber agreed to buy it in 1931, but the Great Depression delayed the sale until 1940. In 1942 the War Department made it an ammunition plant, peaking above 6,000 workers. Renamed Uniroyal in 1967, it closed in 1991 with 1,358 jobs lost and now houses small businesses as Banbury Place.
  • The Telegram since 1894William Irvine founded the Eau Claire Telegram, and its first issue came out on December 16, 1894.
  • A college town from 1916The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire opened its doors in 1916. Its Blugold Marching Band, with 475 members, is the largest marching band in the Midwest.
  • Horseradish capital of the worldEau Claire gives itself that title because Silver Spring Foods, the largest grower and producer of horseradish in the world, is based here, and the cold winters suit the crop.
