About Echelon, New Jersey
Echelon is a census-designated place of 11,896 people within Voorhees Township in Camden County. The land where it stands was once the Echelon Airport, and after the airfield was abandoned, the department store firm of Strawbridge and Clothier secured an option on 125 acres of it, planning to build a large shopping center there.
- A 400-acre planned suburbThe shopping center plan kept growing. Strawbridge and Clothier joined with the Rouse Company, and together they turned the project into a planned community covering 400 acres. The new suburb was named Echelon.
- Opened September 30, 1970The Strawbridge and Clothier store opened on schedule that day, inside the first shopping mall in southern New Jersey built on two levels. There was room in the mall for 112 stores and shops, while townhouses and apartments were already going up around it.
- Now Voorhees Town CenterThe old Echelon Mall is now called Voorhees Town Center. It holds 730,000 square feet of shopping, with Boscov's as its only anchor store as of 2017, and the Voorhees Township municipal offices are there too.
