About Palisades Park, New Jersey

Palisades Park is a borough of 20,292 people in Bergen County. The New Jersey Legislature formed it from parts of Ridgefield Township on March 22, 1899, and named it for its spot high on the New Jersey Palisades. In April 1909 the neighboring borough of Fort Lee annexed part of its land.

Until the 1980s, most families here were factory workers or professionals with roots in Italy, Croatia, Germany and Greece. Houses were cheap, and some shops and offices stood empty. Then Korean immigrants began arriving in a steady stream in the 1990s. By 2000 about 120 Korean stores had opened, and today Koreans make up 65% of the borough, the highest share of any town in the United States.

  • Signs in two languagesIn 1996 the borough passed an ordinance requiring that English lettering on storefront signs be as large as the Korean. Broad Avenue, the main business street, has been called Koreatown, and it holds more Korean restaurants within one mile than any other place in the country.
  • A memorial that stayedIn 2010 the borough set a brass plaque on a stone block in a public park to honor the comfort women, many of them from Korea, whom Japanese soldiers forced into sexual slavery during World War II. In May 2012 two delegations from Japan asked officials to remove it. The borough refused, and days later a South Korean delegation praised that choice.
  • Bergen County's first Korean-American mayorChristopher Chung joined the borough council in January 2014 and won a very close mayoral primary in 2018. No Korean-American had led a Bergen County town before him, and only one had done so anywhere else in New Jersey. Gina S. Kim had become municipal clerk in July 2015, and in 2017 the borough added a Korean version of its website.
  • A library memorial in 2014The Sewol ferry sank off the coast of South Korea on April 16, 2014. That May, the borough's public library honored those who died with a memorial of its own.
