About Leonia, New Jersey

Leonia is a borough of 9,304 people in Bergen County, on the Palisades' western slope. About 1,000 Hackensack people lived here before Dutch and English farmers arrived in 1668, and a third of the early population was enslaved Africans. During the Revolution these farms belonged to the English Neighborhood, and the road now called Grand Avenue carried that name for 200 years as the main inland route to Paulus Hook and Bergen.

Before it was Leonia, the settlement went by the name West Fort Lee. J. Vreeland Moore and other local leaders gave it the new name in 1865, honoring General Charles Lee of the Revolution, the same man Fort Lee honors. Train service brought growth late in the century, and a referendum on December 5, 1894, split Leonia from Ridgefield Township as a borough of its own, one of 26 that Bergen County formed that year.

  • The Athens of New JerseyIn 1899 the advertising executive Artemus Ward landed by ferry at Edgewater and came through Leonia. He bought a large tract and founded the Leonia Heights Land Company to sell homes, and his ads drew professors and artists to the small town. By the 1930s Leonia had more people per capita in Who's Who in America than anywhere else, and 80% of its residents were college graduates. Over the years, five Nobel Prize winners have made their homes here.
  • A school for illustratorsThe illustrator Harvey Dunn settled in Leonia in 1914. The next year he and Charles S. Chapman opened the Leonia School of Illustration, and over the following decade an artists' colony grew up around it.
  • On stage since 1919The Players Guild of Leonia has staged shows every year since 1919, and no theatre troupe in New Jersey has a longer unbroken run. In 1940 its production of One Mad Night was broadcast on WPTZ in Philadelphia and became the first three-act play shown on television. On Grand Avenue, the Guild leases the Civil War Drill Hall Theatre from the borough, in a town that once trained soldiers for the Civil War.
  • The oldest house, about 1765Built around 1765, the Cole-Allaire House is Leonia's oldest home, and it joined the National Register in 1976. Dirck Vreeland built the Vreeland House in 1786 and it was enlarged in 1815; it joined the National Register in 1978.
