About Edgmont, Pennsylvania

Edgmont is a township of 4,283 people in western Delaware County, where its northern edge meets the Chester County line. It was founded in the late 1680s, which makes it one of the first townships in Pennsylvania. Its post office goes by the spelling Edgemont, though much of the township gets its mail through Newtown Square, Media or Glen Mills.

Edgmont covers 9.73 square miles, nearly all of it land, and two creeks cross it side by side. Crum Creek marks the township's eastern border, and Ridley Creek runs roughly parallel to it about 1 mile farther west.

  • Named for an English manorEdgmont took its name from Edgmond, an old royal manor in Shropshire, England. Joseph Baker, one of the township's earliest settlers, had come from there, and he later served as Delaware County's representative in the Provincial Assembly.
  • Colonial farm life in the parkRidley Creek State Park fills 2,600 acres on the township's east side and is its largest single feature. Inside the park, the Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead is a living museum that shows visitors and students what farm life was like in the early 1700s.
  • The village of GradyvilleGradyville is a small unincorporated village inside Edgmont with its own post office. Besides the post office, the village has an antique shop, a flower shop and a gas station, along with one or two houses and an Orthodox church that holds its services in English.
