About Edina, Minnesota
Edina is a city of 53,494 people in Hennepin County, just southwest of Minneapolis. It started in the 1860s as farms and mills along Minnehaha Creek, in the southwest corner of Richfield Township. By the 1870s, 17 families had claimed land there. Most of them were Irish, driven from home by the Great Famine, and settlers from New England and Germany soon followed them to the creek.
In 1888 the township's residents decided to break away and form a village of their own. They met at the Minnehaha Grange Hall to pick a name, and Hennepin Park, Westfield and Edina were all proposed. One meeting fell apart when four committee members threatened to quit. At the next meeting Edina won, 47 votes to 42, and the village was incorporated on December 18, 1888.

- Named for a millAndrew Craik moved here from Edinburgh in 1869, bought the mill on the creek and renamed it the Edina Mill. He made the motion to give the village the same name. A popular story says Irish and Scottish neighbors fought over the choice, but the 1860 census found no Scottish people here. The name may also echo the Dakota word IdΓ©na, which means "to catch fire."
- Morningside left and returnedEdina's first suburban neighborhood grew up in Morningside, in the northeast, in the early 1900s. Its residents wanted more city services, while the rest of the village wanted to stay rural. Morningside broke away as its own village in 1920. It rejoined Edina in 1966.
- J. Frank Wheaton, 1898J. Frank Wheaton, an African American Republican, won a seat in the Minnesota House in November 1898 for District 42, which covered all of Edina. The district had about 100 Black residents out of 40,000. Even so, he carried every Minneapolis ward and every village in it, Edina included.
