About Eldora, Colorado
The camp began in the 1890s as Happy Valley, after John J. Kemp's placer mine. Miners soon renamed it Eldorado. Their mail kept landing in El Dorado, California, which held up payroll checks. So in 1898 the Postal Service cut the last syllable, and the town became Eldora.
- Gold camp pastEldora was a gold camp high in the mountains at 8,700 feet. Its main role was as the shipping point for ore from the Caribou mines.
