About Rollinsville, Colorado

Rollinsville is a community of 194 people in Gilpin County, set on a hillside above South Boulder Creek between Nederland and Black Hawk. It takes its name from John Q. A. Rollins, a leading mining executive in the county during the 1860s and 1870s. Rollins started the town several miles north of Black Hawk as a mining camp, beside a road he was building over the Continental Divide to link Denver with Hot Sulphur Springs, a new resort in Middle Park.

The mining camp did not last, because the ore deposits ran out. Rollins then turned to the travelers on his road, and in 1865 he built the Rollins House Hotel to give them a place to stop along the way.

  • A road builder's townBesides his road over the Divide, Rollins helped keep up the early toll roads that joined Golden to Central City and Black Hawk. Today Rollinsville still sits where the road west begins its climb to Rollins Pass, at the top of the Front Range.
  • A post office since 1871The Rollinsville post office opened in 1871, six years after the hotel, and it has served the community ever since. It still handles mail for the town under ZIP Code 80474.
  • On South Boulder CreekSouth Boulder Creek runs just south of town. From there it follows the railroad tracks into a small canyon, comes out near the line between Boulder and Gilpin counties, and flows on through Pinecliffe.
