About Elizabethton, Tennessee

Elizabethton is a city of 14,546 people and the county seat of Carter County, on the Watauga River. In 1769 a young James Robertson came here with Daniel Boone's party. They found the Watauga Old Fields, land that Native Americans had farmed for generations. Robertson planted corn there while Boone went on to Kentucky. In 1772 the settlers met at Sycamore Shoals and formed the Watauga Association. It was the first independent American government west of the Eastern Continental Divide.

In March 1775 Richard Henderson, a North Carolina judge, met more than 1,200 Cherokees at Sycamore Shoals. Attacullaculla, Oconostota and Dragging Canoe were among them. Henderson bought some 20 million acres between the Cumberland and Kentucky rivers, though the deal broke North Carolina and Virginia law. Elizabethton itself was established in 1797. It stayed a small farm village until the railroads and factories came.

  • Mustering for Kings MountainOn September 26, 1780, about 1,100 Overmountain Men gathered at Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals. Mary Patton and her husband had made five hundred pounds of black powder for them at their Gap Creek mill. On the rainy first night, the men kept it dry in a cave called the Shelving Rock. They crossed the Blue Ridge at Roan Mountain and beat the British Loyalists at Kings Mountain, in South Carolina.
  • Tennessee's oldest frame houseJohn Carter, an early settler, built a white frame plantation house around 1780 above the Watauga River. It is the oldest frame house in Tennessee and now belongs to Sycamore Shoals State Park. Under old paint above a fireplace, a painting of a Virginia plantation turned up. It hints that Carter may have been a son of Robert "King" Carter. The John and Landon Carter House joined the National Register in 1972.
  • Wataugans who founded NashvilleIn the spring of 1779, James Robertson led a few Watauga settlers west to the French Lick on the Cumberland River, where Nashville stands today. Later that year he went back and built shelters there. Families from Watauga arrived on Christmas Day and drove their cattle across the frozen river. Their fort on the bluff was named Fort Nashborough for Francis Nash, who had fought beside Robertson in 1771.
