About Ellicott, New York

Ellicott is a town of 8,771 people at the center of Chautauqua County. It surrounds Jamestown on three sides, the north, east and west, and reaches the east end of Chautauqua Lake. Its first settlers came around 1806, and in 1812 the town was carved out of Pomfret, which made it one of the county's first three towns.

As one of the earliest towns, Ellicott gave up land when new towns were drawn. Busti was formed from part of it in 1823, and Carroll and Poland followed in 1825, though Ellicott later took back some ground from Busti and Carroll. In 1886 Jamestown was separated from Ellicott and became a city of its own.

  • Named for Joseph EllicottThe town takes its name from Joseph Ellicott, who worked as an agent of the Holland Land Company.
  • Where Chautauqua Lake drainsThe Chadakoin River carries the outflow of Chautauqua Lake through Jamestown and into Cassadaga Creek. That creek runs south through Ellicott to join Conewango Creek, so the lake's water ends up in the Allegheny River watershed.
  • A setting for The X-FilesEllicott was the setting for "Alone," an episode of The X-Files. The trucks and police cars on screen are marked "Chautauqua Coroner" and "County of Chautauqua Sheriff," and the sheriff cars look just like the ones the real county uses.
