About Jamestown, New York

Jamestown is a city of 28,712 people in southern Chautauqua County, where the Chadakoin River leaves the eastern tip of Chautauqua Lake. It is named for James Prendergast, whose family bought 3,500 acres in the county in 1806. After exploring this spot and judging it valuable, he added another 1,000 acres in 1808. In the fall of 1809 he and his employee John Blowers put up a log cabin, the first building in Jamestown.

A second cabin followed, and mills and a dam went up on the Chadakoin. The settlement grew into a village in 1827. On April 13, 1886, voters chose Oscar F. Price as the first mayor, and six days later, on April 19, 1886, Jamestown became a city. James Murray was named its first police chief, with six officers under him.

  • The crescent wrench, 1907Karl Peterson and Charles F. Falldine started the Crescent Tool Company in 1907, and the crescent wrench came out of its Jamestown shop. The city made other well-known products too. The Automatic Voting Machine Company, on Jones and Gifford Avenue, led the lever voting machine business until it went bankrupt in 1983.
  • Furniture Capital of the WorldFurniture makers and brass hardware shops once filled Jamestown, earning it the nickname "Furniture Capital of the World." Buyers came from across the country for expositions at the Furniture Mart. That building still stands, and today it holds offices for a number of companies.
  • Lucille Ball's hometownLucille Ball was born in Jamestown on August 6, 1911, and she came back with Desi Arnaz in 1956. The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center honors her, and in August 2011 it marked what would have been her 100th birthday. The Washington Street Bridge, finished in 1964, was rebuilt and renamed the Lucy Desi Bridge. On August 1, 2018, the city opened the National Comedy Center, which Congress designated as the official one.
  • Governor Fenton's mansionReuben Fenton, the 25th Governor of New York, lived in Jamestown, and his former home, the Gov. Reuben Fenton Mansion, is now the Fenton History Center. In 1900 his daughter, Josephine Fenton Gifford, founded Crèche, a women's group that still looks after the city's children.
