About Emet, Oklahoma
Emet is a community of 69 people in Johnston County, Oklahoma. Chickasaw families have lived in this county since the 1830s, and Emet was home to the last governor of their nation. A post office opened here in 1884 and served the community until it closed in 1917.
- The Chickasaw White HouseThis house went up in 1895 as the home of Douglas H. Johnston, who would become the Chickasaw Nation's final governor. Johnston won the office in 1898, and over a political career of 40 years the house held both his family and the work of governing. Known as the White House of the Chickasaws, it is now a museum on the north edge of Emet, though its street address is in Milburn.
- Te Ata, born here in 1895Mary Frances Fisher, known as Te Ata, was born in Emet in 1895, the same year the governor's house was built. She grew up to be a Chickasaw actress and a teller of traditional Chickasaw stories.
- A mission school in 1844In 1844 the Methodist Episcopal Church started the Pleasant Grove Mission School near present-day Emet to serve the Chickasaw Nation. The church founded a second school that same year, the Chickasaw Academy, which stood four miles to the southeast of Tishomingo.
