About Enola, Pennsylvania
Enola is a community of 6,103 people in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, on the west shore of the Susquehanna River across from Harrisburg. It began as a railroad stop: residents petitioned the Northern Central Railroad to give them a freight siding and a station for passengers, and the railroad bought land for them on Wesley Miller's farm, once the Longsdorf place.
The railroad let Miller choose the station's name. Stations called Wesley and Longsdorf already existed, so he named it for Enola, the daughter who was then four years old, and soon the neighborhood around the stop was known by her name too. When the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Northern Central's successor, built its yards here in 1903, it kept the name Enola.
- A giant yard by 1905In the fall of 1902 the Pennsylvania Railroad chose to build a classification yard between Marysville and West Fairview. Its agent, the Manor Realty Co., bought 743 acres in 1903, and the yard opened in January 1905. In 1906, when it was the biggest freight yard anywhere, George W. Fisher, a railroad employee, came from Philadelphia with his wife and eight children as its first yard master. Norfolk Southern still runs Enola Yard and its locomotive shop.
- Houses for the yard's workersThe Enola Realty Co. bought 104 of the 743 acres for $26,500, and that tract became Enola proper, now called North Enola. Beginning in 1909 the company put up more than 220 homes and rented or sold them to families who came looking for work at the yard. South Enola grew nearly as fast on land owned by families such as the Manns, Bretzes and Darrs, and West Enola grew too, mostly on Britton land.
- The first Enola High SchoolThe town's high school was first called Enola High School. Its newer building went up on farmland the Gutshall family had owned from the late 1800s until the 1940s, and it is now East Pennsboro High School. The original school building, at 98 South Enola Drive, now houses the East Pennsboro Branch Library, the township offices and the township police department.
