About Eugene, Indiana
John Groenendyke came from near Ovid, New York. He reached Terre Haute in 1818 and in 1819 settled on the Big Vermillion River, where Eugene now stands. His son James later built a water-powered mill there. Settlers saw it as one of the settlement's best hopes. The family had first come from Holland to New Amsterdam.
S. S. Collett laid out Eugene in 1827 around the mills of James Groenendyke. Later the Toledo, Chicago and Eastern railroad bypassed the village and started the town of Cayuga instead. Eugene had about five hundred people in 1887 and about four hundred by 1913.
- A hometown poetEugene native Alice Craig Fuller wrote several poems about the town. They were collected in her book Lantern Gleams from Old Eugene.
