About Eveleth, Minnesota

Eveleth is a city of 3,493 people in St. Louis County, on Minnesota's Iron Range. Its first buildings went up in 1892, but the ground beneath the young village held valuable iron ore, and by 1895 its organizers realized that most of the town would have to make way for the mines.

Negotiations with property owners dragged on for years, so the first buildings did not move until the summer of 1899. Crews jacked up houses and stores and rolled them on logs, while James H. Flinn's steam hoist on Adams Avenue pulled them up the hill to the present townsite. One account counts 107 homes and businesses relocated by the end of 1900, and Eveleth was incorporated as a city in 1902.

“Not infrequently some house, in which there was a sick man, woman or child to whom we had been called, the next day would be somewhere between the old and new location, or at its final destination, and not always easy to find.”
Dr. Charles W. More, 1926
