About Fairfield, Idaho

Fairfield, a city of 441 people, is the seat of Camas County and the only incorporated city there, so almost half of everyone who lives in this rural county calls it home. The town grew up on the railroad when families from the older settlement of Soldier packed up and moved to be beside the tracks, and for a time the new town was known as New Soldier. Today Camas County School District #121 runs its schools from Fairfield, and Camas County High School stands on Soldier Road in the middle of town.

  • Once called New SoldierThe people of Soldier moved their town here to be on the railroad, and they first called the new place New Soldier. The old name still shows up in town: Fairfield's main street is Soldier Road.
  • Skiing since 1948The Soldier Mountain ski area opened in 1948, 12 miles north of town in the Soldier Mountains. Those peaks and the Smoky Mountains belong to the Sawtooth National Forest, whose local office is the Fairfield Ranger District.
  • 42 below in 1984Fairfield's coldest recorded temperature came on January 19, 1984, when the thermometer fell to 42 degrees below zero. Its hottest readings, 101 degrees, came in July 2002 and again in August 2012.
