About Hailey, Idaho
Hailey, a city of 9,161 people in the Wood River Valley of central Idaho, is the seat of Blaine County. In 1879 John Hailey entered the land where the city now stands, and the town took his name. He served two terms as the Idaho Territory's delegate to Congress and later became librarian of the Idaho State Historical Society.
Hailey served as the seat of Alturas County, a county that no longer exists, from 1882 to 1895. Today it is the seat of Blaine County, and the Blaine County Courthouse in town joined the National Register in 1978.
- First mayor in 1909Simon Moses Friedman settled in Hailey in the 1880s, where he ran a store and raised sheep. When the city incorporated in 1909, voters made him its first mayor. In 1931 his children, Leon and Lucile Friedman, gave the city land for an airport. Friedman Memorial Airport carries his name and now serves the Sun Valley and Ketchum resort area.
- Ezra Pound's birthplaceThe poet Ezra Pound was born in Hailey and spent the first 18 months of his life in the town.
- Days of the Old WestHailey's yearly Fourth of July celebration is called Days of the Old West. Main Street is cleared, crowds fill the sidewalks, and a mock shootout breaks out in the center of town at noon. A parade follows, then food and music at Hop Porter Park, with a rodeo and fireworks to round out the day.
- Snowboard Magazine, 2004Local resident Mark Sullivan started Snowboard Magazine in Hailey in 2004. In a short time it became the world's third largest snowboarding magazine, and in 2007 he sold it to Storm Mountain Publishing.
