About Falmouth, Virginia
Falmouth is a community of 4,956 people in Stafford County. It sits where the Rappahannock River tumbles over its falls, on the northern shore, looking across at Fredericksburg. The Virginia General Assembly created both towns in the same act in 1728. Falmouth was meant to be a port for the people who lived north of the river on Lord Fairfax's huge Northern Neck lands.
Robert "King" Carter, Fairfax's agent, pushed for the new town, and his family ran much of its business for most of the colonial era. Falmouth began in King George County and became part of Stafford when the county lines changed in 1776. It thrived as a port and trading center until 1850, when river traffic thinned and the railroad drew its trade away.
- The road to the ShenandoahWagons from Winchester reached the port along the Falmouth Road. The road followed an old route called the Shenandoah Hunting Path, running northwest through Stafford and Fauquier and over the Blue Ridge at Ashby's Gap. Much of U.S. Highway 17 still follows it today.
- A tiny customs houseBasil Gordon, remembered as America's first millionaire, kept a brick warehouse on the Falmouth waterfront, and it still stands beside a large commercial building from the early 19th century. Close by is a small customs house from the Federal period, among the smallest in the country.
- Union camps, 1862 to 1863Union troops reached Falmouth in April 1862. After the First Battle of Fredericksburg they came back and spent the winter of 1862-1863 camped around the town. Northern generals kept their headquarters southeast of town during the Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville campaigns. During the occupation, thousands of enslaved African Americans escaped to the Union lines and to freedom.
- Gari Melchers at BelmontThe American painter Gari Melchers made his home at Belmont in Falmouth. The house is now a museum run by the University of Mary Washington.
- Lake Mooney, opened 2017Lake Mooney, a 520-acre reservoir, is the newest lake in Virginia. It honors Jason Mooney, a Stafford sheriff's deputy who died on duty in 2007. The lake was stocked with game fish and opened for sport fishing in July 2017.
