About Fanwood, New Jersey
Fanwood is a borough of 7,774 people in Union County, on a ridge in north-central New Jersey. The state chartered the Elizabethtown and Somerville Railroad in 1831. Its tracks reached this spot in 1837, and a depot called the Scotch Plains station opened in 1839. The company took the name Central Railroad of New Jersey in 1849.
To ease the grade, the railroad later shifted its line and opened a new depot, the Fanwood station, in 1874. At the same time its land company, the Central New Jersey Land Improvement Company, laid out Fanwood Park around the depot on curving streets and sold houses there for decades. Fanwood Township was formed from parts of Plainfield and Westfield Townships in 1878. On October 2, 1895, after a referendum the day before, the legislature made Fanwood a borough of its own, and the township it left behind is now Scotch Plains.
- Named for FannyPeople still disagree about the name. John Taylor Johnston, president of the Central Railroad when Fanwood Park was laid out, named the community for his wife, Frances, whom people called Fanny, according to his daughter Emily. Another account credits Fannie Wood, an author.
- The heart of Fanwood ParkThe depot the railroad opened in 1874 stands on the north side of the tracks, built in the Victorian Carpenter Gothic style, and the new neighborhood of Fanwood Park grew up around it. A shelter went up across the tracks on the south side in 1897, and a crossing structure followed in 1946. Raritan Valley Line trains still stop there.
- A wedding gift in 1894Benjamin Urner built a Georgian Revival house in 1894 as a present for his daughter when she married William M. Gibbs. The Urner/Gibbs house stands in the old Fanwood Park neighborhood along North Avenue and North Martine Avenue, among 57 historic buildings spread over 52 acres.
- Firefighters since 1890Volunteers organized Fanwood's fire company in 1890, five years before the borough existed, and put up its first firehouse in 1897. It is still an all-volunteer department, with 30 members working out of a single station.
- A nursing pioneer born in 1916Eleanor C. Lambertsen, born here in 1916, started as a bedside nurse while training at Overlook Hospital. Her plan for team nursing made registered nurses the coordinators of care with doctors and other nursing staff. In 1958 she became the American Hospital Association's first nursing division director, and she later served as dean of the nursing school run jointly by Cornell University and New York Hospital. In 2012 the American Nurses Association added her to its Hall of Fame.
