About Fargo, North Dakota

Fargo is a city of 125,990 people and the seat of Cass County, on the west bank of the Red River of the North. It was founded in 1871, and on September 22 of that year a post office opened here with Gordon J. Keenan as postmaster. The settlers called the place Centralia. It was later renamed for William Fargo, a Northern Pacific Railway director who founded the Wells Fargo Express Company.

At first two settlements grew up side by side. Northern Pacific engineers kept good order in Fargo on the Prairie, while Fargo in the Timber stayed mostly lawless until federal authorities cracked down and it died out. The modern city grew from the prairie side. Once the railroad arrived, the town prospered and earned the nickname Gateway to the West.

  • Rebuilt in brick after 1893On June 7, 1893, a fire burned 31 blocks of downtown. Fargo began rebuilding at once, this time in brick, and it laid out fresh streets and put in a water system. Within a year, more than 246 new buildings stood in the burned district.
  • Roosevelt's return in 1910The North Dakota Agricultural College was founded here in 1890. Theodore Roosevelt came back on Labor Day in 1910 to lay the cornerstone of its new library. He told a crowd of 30,000 about his first visit 27 years earlier and said homesteading in North Dakota helped carry him to the presidency. The college became North Dakota State University in 1960.
  • 29% of all BuicksThe Pence Automobile Company opened in Fargo in 1905, and at one point it handled 29% of all Buicks sold. Its warehouse is now on the National Register. Fargo also had a regional Ford assembly plant, which was turning out about 70 cars a day by 1917 and ran until 1956.
  • The 1957 tornadoIn 1957 a tornado wrecked a large part of the city's north end. Ted Fujita, known for his tornado scale, studied photographs of the storm. That work helped him develop the ideas of the wall cloud and the tail cloud, early scientific terms for describing tornadoes.
  • Holding back the RedThe Red River flows north, so melting snow and ice often jam it and flood the flat valley. In 1997 the river crested at a record 39.5 feet, and in 2009 it set a new record of 40.84 feet. Both times Fargo stayed safe, thanks to its flood defenses and the sandbags its residents filled.
