About West Fargo, North Dakota

West Fargo is a city of 38,626 people in Cass County, on the western edge of Fargo. It began as a Northern Pacific stop near the Sheyenne River, where the railroad laid a siding spur and put up stockyards and a water station. The railroad called the place Sheyenne Stockyards. A post office opened there on June 18, 1874, with Arthur Deacon in charge, but it closed on May 14, 1875, and local mail went to Fargo after that.

In 1919 a group of farmers who had formed the Equity Co-op Packing Company built a meat plant here. Twenty-four homes, a hotel, a restaurant and a general store went up around it. The company went bankrupt in 1922, and Armour and Company bought the plant in 1925, the same year the settlement became the Village of West Fargo. Through the 1930s most people in town worked at the packinghouse, which ran until Armour shut it down in 1960.

  • Named for John E. HaggartBefore it took its present name, the settlement was called Haggartville and then Haggart, after John E. Haggart, who owned the land. He served as postmaster and as a U.S. Marshal, and he was the first sheriff of Cass County. As settlers arrived, they built the first school in 1876, School District No. 6.
  • Why the teams are PackersThe Armour plant ran its meat processing on an assembly line, and it turned the leftovers into fertilizer, adhesives and soap. West Fargo High School still calls its teams the Packers in memory of those years.
  • A new name in 1967Southwest Fargo kept growing for decades. In 1967 it took the name West Fargo, and the old Village of West Fargo became West Fargo Industrial Park. In 1989 West Fargo merged with the neighboring city of Riverside.
  • The Big Iron Farm ShowEvery year the West Fargo Fairgrounds hosts Big Iron, a three-day show of farm equipment with more than 900 exhibit booths. Over 87,000 people came to the show in 2013.
  • Bonanzaville, USABonanzaville is a museum village of old buildings gathered from around the region, including a church, a schoolhouse and log cabins. It takes its name from the huge bonanza farms of the area, and it holds a Pioneer Days celebration with a parade, food, demonstrations and tours.
