About Farmingdale, New York

In the 1830s, land developer Ambrose George bought a big tract, expecting the Long Island Rail Road to be built. He opened a general store on the west side of his land and called it Farmingdale. When trains reached the area in October 1841, the railroad gave its new station the same name.

Thomas Powell was the first European settler here, arriving in 1687. On October 18, 1695, he bought a 15-square-mile tract from three Native American tribes. That deal, called the Bethpage Purchase, took in what is now Farmingdale and several nearby communities.
