About Plainedge, New York
In the early 1800s, Plainedge was known as Turkeyville. Its poultry farms were known for raising turkeys well. That name faded by 1845, when school district maps were drawn. The name Plainedge describes the edge of the Hempstead Plains, which stretched from Massapequa to Westbury.
During the Civil War and World War I, Plainedge farmers grew cabbages, cucumbers and potatoes. By the mid-1900s, a soil blight and state limits over golden nematodes ended most farming.
- A hard chapter told plainlyEnslaved Africans worked the early farms of Plainedge for local landowners. New York passed a gradual emancipation law in 1817. By 1823, slavery had ended in Plainedge.
