About North Wantagh, New York
North Wantagh is a hamlet of 11,931 people in the Town of Hempstead, on Long Island's South Shore. It has no post office of its own, so homes here carry Wantagh or Seaford mailing addresses, and its children go to Levittown schools, including General Douglas MacArthur High School.
For generations this was farm country, a settlement known as Jerusalem. After World War II, veterans coming home needed places to live, and a wave of home building covered the last of the farms. The name Jerusalem faded away, and its land became North Wantagh and South Levittown.
- Named Jerusalem in 1666Settlers received a charter for this area in 1666 and called their settlement Jerusalem. The Quakers who came here and farmed the land shaped that choice of name.
- A one-room school in 1876In 1876 the farm families of Jerusalem set out to build a school for their children. The land came from John Birdsall Garner's farm, and a one-room schoolhouse went up on it. Later, two more rooms were built across its front, looking out on Wantagh Avenue.
- Still a school todayThe old schoolhouse is now a Town of Hempstead landmark, and young children still learn there, because it is used as a pre-K. It is listed on the National Register as the Jerusalem District No. 5 Schoolhouse.
