About Wantagh, New York

Early settlers called this place Jerusalem, and its first post office opened under that name in 1837. Around the 1880s the village became Ridgewood. Another New York town already had that name. So Ridgewood was renamed Wantagh to end the confusion.

On April 21, 1790, George Washington rode through Jerusalem, as Wantagh was then known. He was making a five-day trip around Long Island. A plaque from the Daughters of the American Revolution now marks his visit.
