About Massapequa, New York

Massapequa was once a small resort for visitors from Manhattan and Brooklyn. Its best known spot was the Massapequa Hotel, built in 1888 with 300 rooms for summer guests. Guests could golf, swim, boat, cycle and fish at Massapequa Lake. Business fell off in the early 1900s, and the hotel closed in 1914.

In 1969, drainage work at Massapequa Lake turned up 184 jasper blades. They lay in neat rows just below the surface. The blades date from about 75 BCE to 400 CE.

  • Name origin and first peopleThe name Massapequa means great water land. Its first people were the Massapequa, an Algonquian-speaking band. Around 1658, merchants from Oyster Bay fooled Chief Tackapausha into a land sale. He tried to undo the deal but never succeeded.
