About Sloan, New York

Sloan is a village of 3,775 people in Erie County, inside the town of Cheektowaga and just east of Buffalo. Between 1850 and 1880, five railroad lines were laid across this ground, and the jobs they brought gave rise to a village. Sloan was carved from part of Cheektowaga and incorporated on March 17, 1896, and it took its name from Samuel Sloan, president of the Lackawanna Railroad.

The Lackawanna and the New York Central wanted their workers living near the yards, so they helped employees buy building lots. The railroad even provided the crews and materials for the first Village Hall, a single building that also served as the courtroom and the fire hall. Big rail yards still frame the village: the CSX Frontier yard, once the New York Central's, lies to the north, and the Norfolk Southern Bison yard, once the Erie-Lackawanna's, lies to the south.

  • Streets named for railroad menWhen Sloan's first streets were laid out, they honored Lackawanna officials. Halstead Avenue recalls William Halstead, the railroad's paymaster, and Gates Street recalls a Mr. Gates of the stores and supply department. A master mechanic, Mr. Griffith, was honored as well, and Lackawanna Avenue carries the name of the railroad itself.
  • A village police forceFor much of its history Sloan kept its own police, with between three and six officers. Around 1978 the village did away with the force, and its four patrolmen and one captain moved over to the Cheektowaga Police Department, which still patrols Sloan today.
  • Sam Sloan's landWhen the village was founded, Sam Sloan owned land that reached all the way to where the New York State Thruway runs. Today the village is much smaller, covering about 1 square mile between Broadway on the north and Harlem Road on the east.
