About Farmington, Washington County, Wisconsin
Farmington is a town of 3,645 people in Washington County, in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine region. A glacier shaped the land, leaving kames, eskers, drumlins and kettle lakes such as Ehne, Erler, Green, Miller and Lake Twelve, while the Milwaukee River's north branch, Stony Creek and Wallace Creek cut across it. Potawatomi and Menominee people lived here early in the 19th century, until treaties in 1831 and 1833 handed the land to the United States.
Until February 11, 1847, the area was part of West Bend's town government, and on that date the territorial legislature created the Town of Clarence. It took the name Farmington on March 11, 1848, and most of its early settlers came from Germany and Ireland. Dairy farms spread across the town in the 19th and 20th centuries, so cheese factories opened at Orchard Grove in 1871 and at Cheeseville in 1881, and about 60% of the land is still farmed.
- Mounds older than the townBetween 650 CE and 1300 CE, people who hunted, fished, gathered wild plants and made pottery built earthen mounds here in the shapes of birds, mammals, reptiles and mythical creatures. At least forty-seven of them, called the Hagner Group, once stood in Farmington. Settlers plowed some under for fields, but twenty-eight survive in a county park, among them a lizard mound 250 feet long.
- The strolling PotawatomiThe 1833 Treaty of Chicago, ratified in 1835, ordered the Potawatomi out of Wisconsin by 1838. Many went west to Kansas, but some stayed on their old lands, now owned by settlers, and records of the time called them strolling Potawatomi. Those who avoided removal later gathered in northern Wisconsin and formed the Forest County Potawatomi Community.
- Fillmore, named for a presidentIn the early 1850s immigrants from Saxony founded Fillmore in the east of the town and named it for Millard Fillmore, then the president. They opened an inn and brewery in 1855 that became a local gathering place. In 1862 some of them organized the Farmington Turnverein, a German cultural club, and the club put up its Fillmore Turner Hall in 1868. The hall was still standing in 2020.
- Boltonville on Stony CreekHarlow Bolton started the Boltonville settlement in 1854 in the northeast corner of the town. Its settlers put Stony Creek to work turning grist and saw mills, and the village grew to include a cheese factory, shops, a post office and a school.
