About Waubeka, Wisconsin
The village was named for Chief Waubeka. He lived nearby for many years after settlers began to arrive. His people grew corn in clearings along the Milwaukee River. Their main work, though, was hunting and fishing. George W. Foster later surveyed the village and laid out its lots.
George W. Foster and H. J. Turner built the first dam across the Milwaukee River here. The water power proved excellent, so they built a sawmill and a gristmill. The gristmill burned a few years after it was finished.
- The chief's villageChief Waubeka had his village at this spot. He is said to have led about a hundred Native people here as late as 1850.
