About Fayette, Alabama

Fayette is a city of 4,285 people and the seat of Fayette County, on the Sipsey River in northwest-central Alabama. Settlers came in the early nineteenth century to the ground that is now the Old Town section, and they called the place La Fayette, after the Marquis de LaFayette, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

The town was incorporated on January 15, 1821, and as the county seat it took the name Fayette Court House. Maps and the census of 1880 and 1890 called it Fayetteville, and in 1898 the name was officially shortened to Fayette. In 1890 a new rail line, laid by the Richmond and Danville Extension Company, linked Fayette with the Georgia Pacific Railroad, which helped a town that lived by farming and shipping goods.

  • Golden Eagle Syrup since 1928Victor and Lucy Patterson started making Golden Eagle Syrup in Fayette in 1928. The company has made it at the same spot in the city ever since, and the syrup still comes from its plant downtown.
  • From farms to factoriesInto the twentieth century, Fayette's living came from agriculture and the shipping of goods. In the mid-twentieth century the town branched out, adding plants that made clothing, hardwood flooring and truck beds, along with timber farming.
  • A home for folk artThe Fayette Art Museum and Civic Center holds more than 3,500 works of art, and many of them came from local folk artists. Several of those artists were born in Fayette, including Sybil Gibson, Benjamin Perkins, Lois Wilson and Jimmy Lee Sudduth. The Fayette County Depot Museum, set in a historic train station, tells the story of the city and county and holds an arts festival every August.
  • A weekly paper from 1851The Fayette Banner, a Democratic weekly, was founded in 1851, when the town was still small. Fayette had 250 people in 1870 and 800 in 1880, and in 1914 a second weekly, the Fayette County Times, began publishing in town.
  • Judge Moore's houseJohn C. Moore, a probate judge, built one of the earliest houses in Fayette. It still stands today on Elyton Road.
