About Fayette, New York
Fayette is a town in Seneca County, set between two Finger Lakes, with Seneca Lake on its western line and Cayuga Lake on its eastern one. The land belonged to the Central New York Military Tract, and settlers began arriving around 1790. In 1800 the town was carved out of Romulus under the name Washington, and it took the name Fayette in 1808.
On April 6, 1830, Joseph Smith came over from nearby Palmyra and founded the Church of Christ inside Peter Whitmer Sr.'s log house here. Smith, Whitmer and four others were its first six members. That meeting started the Latter Day Saint movement, and the movement's largest branch grew into the LDS Church.
- The Whitmer cabin rebuiltA log home was reconstructed on the site of the original Whitmer house and dedicated in 1980, during the LDS Church's sesquicentennial. Church president Spencer W. Kimball led the dedication, and it went out by satellite as part of the church's general conference to stake centers around the world. The church still runs the home as a religious historic site.
- Birthplace of Red JacketThe Seneca chief Red Jacket was born in what is now Fayette. His Seneca name, Saguwatha, means "the keeper awake."
- A town of lakes and canalWater covers 11.3 of Fayette's 66.5 square miles. Teall Beach and Pastime Park are lakeside hamlets on Seneca Lake, while Canoga and the freshwater Canoga Marsh sit by Cayuga Lake. Part of the northern line follows the Seneca River, which carries the Cayuga-Seneca Canal and ties the town to the Erie Canal system.
