About the City of Geneva, Ontario County, New York

During the 1830s, John Brink, a government surveyor, borrowed this city's name for two lakes in Wisconsin. He called them Geneva Lake and Lake Geneva. Geneva itself was incorporated as a village in 1806. It became a city under an 1871 charter.

The Smith Opera House downtown was paid for by Geneva resident William Smith and first opened in 1894. It seats about 1,400 people. Despite its name, it hosts plays, orchestra concerts and films as well as opera.
