About Fellsmere, Florida

Fellsmere is a city of 4,834 people in Indian River County, with Sebastian to the east and Blue Cypress Lake to the west. In February 1915 the new city voted without dissent for a charter that let women vote in city elections. The state legislature approved it with no one objecting to that clause, even though statewide suffrage bills failed there that same year.

Zena M. Dreier, who said she had written the clause into the charter herself, voted in the city election of June 19, 1915. She became the first woman in Florida, or anywhere in the American South, to legally cast a ballot. That came five years ahead of the 19th Amendment, which extended the vote to all American women in August 1920. The same election let corporations vote, and E. Nelson Fell voted on behalf of Fellsmere Farms, his company.

  • First in Florida, 1915Fellsmere was the first city or town in Florida to give women the vote, and the first anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. A historical marker in town now honors it as the place where equal voting rights for Florida's women began.
  • Rails west to BroadmoorSons of the printing magnate Anthony Octavius Russell built the first line into Fellsmere, the narrow-gauge Sebastian-Cincinnatus Railroad. In 1910 the standard-gauge Fellsmere Railroad took its place and was later pushed west to Broadmoor, a town that has since disappeared. In 1924 the line was sold to the Trans-Florida Central Railroad, and its tracks were abandoned in 1952.
  • Frog legs every JanuaryFran Adams and other residents first planned the Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival in 1990 to raise money for the city's recreation department, and it has become a January tradition. For the 2024 festival, organizers brought in frog legs from Louisiana, 3,000 pounds of them, plus 2,500 pounds of alligator from South Florida.
  • Citrus countryCitrus groves and other farms ring the city, and the work in those fields is the reason Fellsmere has a large Hispanic community. Many small, locally owned businesses thrive in town, among them restaurants, ethnic food shops, architectural salvage, gift and guitar stores, and motorized vehicle repair.
