About Winter Beach, Florida
Winter Beach is a community of 3,136 people in Indian River County, on the mainland shore of the Indian River across from Orchid Island. It was founded in the late 1890s as the town of Woodley, and in 1902 the community took the name Quay.
The name changed again during the Florida land boom, when many towns picked names meant to catch the eye of buyers from the North. Wikipedia dates the switch to Winter Beach to 1922, while Allen Morris's Florida Place Names puts it in 1925. The old name lingered for years, and parts of Winter Beach were still counted as Quay in the 1940 census.
“Where the Sunshine Spends the Winter”
- Named for Senator QuayThe 1902 name honored Matthew S. Quay, a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who spent his winters at St. Lucie Village, just above Fort Pierce, where his old house still stands. He had introduced a Senate bill to make the Intracoastal Waterway wider and deeper, and the people of the community believed the work would help them.
- Mail by horseback in 1902A 1964 account cited by Allen Morris says that in 1902, mail bound for the Okeechobee country went out from Quay once a week on horseback, traveling inland by way of Fort Drum.
- Nearly the county seatWhen Indian River County was created in 1925, Winter Beach came close to becoming its county seat. Vero, then still a town, incorporated as a city and was chosen instead. Today it is Vero Beach, about 6 miles south on U.S. Route 1.
