About Gifford, Florida
Gifford, home to 5,511 people, lies just north of Vero Beach in Indian River County, west of the Indian River. The Indian River County Historical Society dates its start to the mid-1880s, and it grew as a farming village for Black families. Residents first called it Brownsville, after William Brown, a farmer who had settled there in the 1880s. Another town in North Florida already had that name, so the village took the name of Charlie Gifford instead. He was the railroad's stationmaster and the son of Henry T. Gifford.
By 1893 Black laborers had joined the early settlers to build Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway. The town's first school opened in 1898, but it took only white children. In 1901 William Edward Geoffrey, a railroad worker from Darlington, South Carolina, bought eighty acres in Gifford. He donated some of it for a park and a school for Black children.
- The Gifford SchoolGeoffrey's school became the heart of the community. It added high school grades in 1938, and in 1952 the Indian River County School Board paid for a new building for Gifford High School, on 45th Street at 28th Court. It stayed Gifford High School until integration. Its last class graduated in 1969, and it then became a middle school.
- A church that began at homeIn 1926 Elder Collins led a small group of African Americans in organizing Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church. Among them were Mother Hattie McGriff, Mother Mattie Phillips, Sister Annie Slater and Deacon Jordan. For three years they worshiped in members' houses. In 1929 they built a hall where two dirt roads crossed, and those roads later became 25th Avenue and 42nd Street.
- Hometown of Highwaymen paintersSeveral of the African American landscape artists known as The Highwaymen grew up in Gifford, among them the painter Harold Newton.
- A museum in 2018The Gifford Community Cultural & Resource Center took over the Historic Macedonia Church in 2018 and turned it into the Gifford Historical Museum.
