About the City of Fenton, Michigan
The City of Fenton is a city of 12,050 people in Genesee County. When Michigan first drew township lines in this area, the ground of present-day Fenton Township belonged to a large township called Grand Blanc and sat in Shiawassee County, not Genesee. Then an act of July 26, 1836, created the township of Argentine, and for a time Argentine held the Fenton territory as well as its own.
- First land bought in 1834Clark Dibble bought the first piece of land in what is now Fenton in 1834, and Dustin Cheney made the trip with him. Both men stayed for good. They were later buried here, with their families beside them.
- Iron from EnglandThe builders of the railroad line bought twenty-six hundred tons of iron in England, which they figured would be enough to lay track all the way to Fentonville. More delays followed, and the first locomotive did not roll over the finished track into Genesee County until four years after work on the line began. The Fenton Railroad Depot joined the National Register in 1983.
