About Fiskdale, Massachusetts
Fiskdale is a village of 2,797 people in the town of Sturbridge, in Worcester County. It grew up on the Quinebaug River after 1826, when Henry Fiske and his brother Josiah J. Fiske, whose father was David Fiske of Fiske Hill, bought Moses Allen's farm there. They formed the first company to run a factory at that spot on the river, and the village around it took their name.
Henry Fiske moved here as the resident owner and put up the first brick mill, along with houses for the families who would work in it. The cotton mill went into operation in May 1829, and it gave the new village its main source of work.
- Five stories of brickThe Fiskes' first cotton mill was eighty-four feet long and forty feet wide, and it rose five stories above the Quinebaug. Henry Fiske built rows of tenement houses near it, so the workers lived within a short walk of the looms.
- Fiskdale Mills since 1869The business began as the Sturbridge Cotton Mills. In 1869 an act of the Massachusetts Legislature changed the company's name to Fiskdale Mills, so the mill and the village it built finally carried the same name.
- Big Alum Pond and Long PondSturbridge residents think of Fiskdale as the northwest corner of town, home to Tantasqua Regional High School. Two ponds, Big Alum and Long, lie within it, and so does a share of East Brimfield Lake.
