About Sturbridge, Massachusetts, Drawn Like an Old Atlas

Sturbridge is a town of 9,867 people in Worcester County, set among hills along the Quinebaug River. On September 3, 1729, the General Court gave a new township to a group of petitioners, most of whom came from Medfield, and the place was first known as New Medfield. Joseph Smith became the first settler to last a winter here, probably 1730 to 1731. Two years later John Comins Jr. of Oxford put up the first meeting-house. The town was incorporated on June 24, 1738, and took its name from Stourbridge in England.

Mills later turned the valley into a place of work. The Sturbridge Manufacturing Company started the old town's first cotton factory at Westville in the fall of 1812. Southbridge split off in 1816 and took a little under a third of the voters. In May 1829 the Fiske brothers started a five-story brick cotton mill at Fiskdale. In 1853 the Snell brothers built stone mills at Wight Village and moved their auger and bit business there from Ware.

“To those who have their home here it is the very centre of the world.”
History of Worcester County, 1889
  • Neighbors found by an axeAmong the earliest settlers were Henry and Daniel Fiske, who camped near the top of today's Fiske Hill without knowing where their closest neighbor lived. On a clear afternoon they heard an axe to the south and followed the sound, while the man swinging it heard theirs and came toward them. Meeting at the Quinebaug, they felled two trees across it for a bridge and shook hands. The neighbor was James Denison, whose home was a cave near Westville.
  • Black lead at TantiusquesThe mine is older than the town. Black lead is graphite. Winthrop's grandson later hinted at silver, yet the mine's president said in 1902 that none had ever turned up. Boston's Frederick Tudor bought it in 1828 and 1829, and a rockfall killed two workers in 1830.
  • A Lincoln vote at 104In June 1776 the town voted by a large majority to support independence, and 239 Sturbridge men later served. One of them, Deacon John Phillips, walked into the town hall on November 8, 1864, at 104 years old and announced loudly that he would vote for Abraham Lincoln. He then asked the Civil War soldiers present to line up so he could shake each man's hand.
  • The Revere bell rings againThe meeting-house on the Common got a Revere bell in 1833. Early on August 5, 1908, lightning struck and the old building burned. The town rebuilt, and when the new church was dedicated on May 11, 1910, the old bell had been recast and was ringing once more.
  • The Oliver Wight HouseThis Georgian house went up in the 1780s for Oliver Wight, a cabinetmaker, and Ebenezer Howard later ran it as a tavern. The folk artist Rufus Porter painted a mural on the walls of its front hall, and Old Sturbridge Village later used it as a motor lodge. It joined the National Register in 1982.
