About Flagtown, New Jersey
Flagtown takes its name from Jacob Flagg, who bought a tract of land in 1700. The village was first spelled Flaggtown. Years later a descendant, J. Flagg, kept the local tavern. During the Revolutionary War it served as headquarters for the Hillsborough Company.
The South Branch Railroad cut through in 1873. The land north of the tracks became known as Flaggtown Station. A village and a station with nearly the same name, side by side, confused the Post Office. In January 1878 the old village was renamed Frankfort. The station area became Flagtown.
