About Fletcher, North Carolina

Fletcher is a town of 7,987 people on the northern edge of Henderson County, where it borders the city of Asheville. Settlement here began in 1795, when Samuel Murray moved his family from South Carolina into the mountains of western North Carolina. They climbed the old Howard Gap Road, which in places was barely more than an Indian trail, and Murray chose land just east of the road's end, close to today's Fletcher Community Park.

When the Buncombe Turnpike was built in the early 1800s, the settlement became one of its main way-stations. Families, farmers and traders used the road to travel north from South Carolina to Asheville and beyond. In 1827 Murray's son became the first to run a post office in the Limestone District, which belonged to Buncombe County at the time, and the place took the name Murrayville.

  • Samuel Murray's 10,000 acresAfter settling here, Murray kept buying property in the Limestone District until he owned more than 10,000 acres. His land ran roughly from Cane Creek on the south to Long Shoals Road on the north, with the French Broad River on the west and Hooper's Creek and Burney Mountain on the east.
  • Named for a postmaster in 1886The town's name followed its postmasters. Murrayville became Shufordsville in 1837, when Jacob Rhyne Shuford was appointed postmaster. A year later, in 1838, the state created Henderson County, and Shufordsville moved out of Buncombe County into the new county. The name changed one final time in 1886, when Dr. George Fletcher took over the post office.
  • Incorporated in 1989Fletcher became an incorporated town in 1989. Robert (Bob) G. Parrish Sr. was its first elected mayor, and he served until his death in July 2000, during his third term. The town chose a motto that speaks of taking pride in the past and keeping faith in the future.
