About Royal Pines, North Carolina

Royal Pines is a community of 4,127 people in Buncombe County. Its western edge follows U.S. Route 25A and the line of the Asheville city limits. Daniel Blake was one of the first plantation owners from Charleston to make a home in the area, and his house passed to his son and then to his granddaughter. In 1925 she sold the Blake House and 516 acres around it to the William Phillips Company of Miami, which laid the land out as a subdivision.

Buyers snapped up lots during the 1920s, yet hardly anyone built a house there before 1940. When the Great Depression struck, many owners couldn't keep up their mortgage payments, so they walked away from their lots.

  • Named for white pinesThe William Phillips Company called its subdivision Royal Pines for the white pine trees that stood along the carriage road leading to the Blake House.
  • A new developer in 1940In 1940 the William Phillips Company could no longer pay its loan, and the land it had left undeveloped passed to a new developer, Parkway Properties. Better transportation drew more people out of the city in the second half of the century, and that growth finally filled in the neighborhood.
  • Brown Mountain at the centerBrown Mountain rises in the middle of Royal Pines to an elevation of 2,996 feet. The community covers 2.7 square miles and reaches northeast to Mills Gap Road.
