About Florham Park, New Jersey
Florham Park is a borough of 12,585 people in Morris County, with the Passaic River along its eastern edge. The Lenape lived here first, and English and Dutch settlers arrived sometime between 1680 and 1700 and turned the land into fine farm country. Over the years the place was called Hoppingtown, Columbia, Afton and Broomtown, the last for the brooms its people made.
In 1887 Florence Vanderbilt Twombly, a granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and her husband, the financier Hamilton McKown Twombly, came out to the Morris County countryside and built an English-style mansion on 840 acres. Their neighbor Leslie Ward, a founder of the Prudential Insurance Company, held about 1,000 acres of his own. Both families backed a petition for a new municipality. The legislature approved it on March 9, 1899, and with the governor's signature on March 20 the borough was split off from Chatham Township.
- Florence plus HamiltonThe Twomblys joined their first names to call their estate Florham. McKim, Mead & White designed the mansion, Frederick Law Olmsted planned the grounds, and the estate reached across both Madison and Florham Park. Fairleigh Dickinson University bought the Twombly mansion and part of the land in 1957 and opened a campus there a year later.
- The Park from BrooklakeThe rest of the borough's name came from Leslie Ward's estate, Brooklake Park, named partly for the lake on the property. Brooklake Country Club stands on that ground today.
- The Little Red SchoolhouseBuilt of red brick in 1866 and enlarged in 1905, the schoolhouse at 203 Ridgedale Avenue still has its tall windows and bell tower. When Columbia Turnpike was widened in 1978, the building was moved back from the road to save it. The Historical Society of Florham Park now runs it as a museum, with old desks, maps and broom-making tools from the town's farming days, and it joined the National Register in 1986.
- Home of the Jets since 2008In 2008 the New York Jets moved their main headquarters away from Hofstra University, in Hempstead, New York, to a new home in Florham Park, the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Five other towns had been finalists for the team: Wood-Ridge, Millburn, Jersey City, South Amboy and Berkeley Heights. The Jets work here most of the year and head to Cortland, New York, for training camp each July and August.
- Holy Family School, 1954Holy Family School, a Catholic school of the Diocese of Paterson, opened in 1954 with 173 students. As the town grew, so did the school, and by the 1960s it reached a peak of 700 students.
