About Flourtown, Pennsylvania

Flourtown is a community of 4,786 people in Springfield Township, Montgomery County. In the 1680s William Penn kept Springfield Township as one of his family's manors, and the community itself was founded in 1743. Through the 1700s most people here farmed, and lime burning and milling came close behind. The Wissahickon Creek and its branches turned at least three mills in the township, and that milling trade gave Flourtown its name.

“have their wheat ground by the millers along the Wissahickon. Most of the houses are old, many dating to Colonial times.”

  • The Black Horse Inn, about 1744Abraham Wakerly built the Black Horse Inn around 1744 for farmers who brought their grain to the Flourtown mills. Later it took in travelers on the stagecoach line between Philadelphia and Bethlehem. Jacob Meninger enlarged it in 1833, and it ranked among the township's largest buildings. Three generations of the McCloskey family ran it from 1880 on, and they were its last owners. The inn joined the National Register in 2005.
  • A fire company since 1910The Flourtown Fire Company was founded in 1910. It answers fire and emergency calls across Springfield Township, covering Flourtown, Erdenheim, Oreland and Wyndmoor, and it helps neighbors farther out through mutual aid agreements.
