About Oreland, Pennsylvania
Oreland is a community of 6,210 people in Montgomery County, spread across Springfield and Upper Dublin townships just outside Philadelphia. The land was settled as part of Springfield Township, one of William Penn's manors, and in 1686 Thomas Fitzwater came upon big deposits of lime on his property. He built a kiln to burn it, and by 1693 the work had drawn Penn's notice.
Penn had a road laid from the port on the Delaware River out to the kiln. That road, Limekiln Pike, was among the area's first, and it still carries traffic today. The lime and the ore dug nearby later gave the place its name, and mining and farming kept Oreland working until the 20th century, when it grew into a suburb of Philadelphia.
- Laid out in 1889The lime trade was two centuries old before anyone drew up a village. Oreland was finally laid out in 1889 next to the North Penn Railroad, which ran along the east side of town and is now SEPTA's Lansdale/Doylestown Line. A second line, the Plymouth Railroad, came in from Conshohocken by way of Plymouth and Flourtown.
- Tracks into a footpathMost of the Plymouth Railroad's tracks came up in the 1980s, and the old right-of-way became a path heading southwest from Ehrenpfort Road toward Flourtown. Housing built in the 1990s cut it at Oreland Mill Road, but children, runners and bikers still use what remains.
- Washington's headquarters, 1777Emlen House, on a farm that straddles Oreland and Whitemarsh, was George Washington's headquarters from November 2 to December 11, 1777, while his army was in Whitemarsh during the Revolutionary War. A bronze tablet put up in 1928 marks the house.
- From Mistfield to Mrs. Paul'sIn the early 1900s Frances and A. J. Antello Devereux owned the Emlen farm and called it Mistfield Farm. Edward Piszek, who founded the frozen seafood company Mrs. Paul's Kitchens, bought it in 1956, and his family held it until they sold it to a developer in 2013.
