About Glenside, Pennsylvania

Glenside is a community of 7,737 people in Montgomery County. It is split between Cheltenham and Abington townships, on the edge of Northwest Philadelphia. The town grew up around a railroad stop. A station was built here in 1855 and named Tacony Station, for Tacony Creek, which runs through the settlement, and it was later known as Abington Station.

When a post office opened in 1888, it took the name Glenside, and the station was renamed to match. Volunteers formed the Glenside Fire Company in 1900 and kept their equipment in a building until they got a firehouse of their own in 1907. By the early 1900s a busy row of shops lined Easton Road, and the Glenside Trust Company opened a bank in 1922.

  • The Keswick, Christmas 1928The Keswick Theatre opened on Christmas Day 1928. Horace Trumbauer, who designed the Philadelphia Museum of Art, drew its plans. Builders of that era often put vaudeville houses next to suburban rail lines so city crowds could ride out, and the Keswick was one of them. It joined the National Register in 1983 but closed in 1985 and came close to being torn down. By 1988 it was open again, this time for live music.
  • Independence Day parade since 1904Glenside's yearly Independence Day parade got its start in 1904, and the town has kept the tradition going each summer.
  • A hall for veteransGlenside Memorial Hall was dedicated to the town's World War I veterans and seats up to 180 people. It stands on the Cheltenham side of town, along with the post office and the Glenside Free Library, which was founded in 1928. The hall joined the National Register in 2004.
  • Two schools for one townBecause Glenside straddles two townships, its children went to two public schools. Those living in Abington Township attended the Weldon School, while those in Cheltenham Township went to Glenside School, built in 1908. That building was torn down in the 1960s.
