About Wyncote, Pennsylvania

Wyncote is a community of 3,081 people in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, at the far southeastern corner of the county where it meets northwest Philadelphia. Center City Philadelphia lies 11 miles away. Its streets hold many restored Victorian homes, along with Colonial Revival houses built of the gray stone used across the Philadelphia area.

  • Ezra Pound's boyhood homeEzra Pound was born in Idaho in 1885, and his family raised him in Wyncote, at 166 Fernbrook Avenue. Years later Carl Gatter lived in that same house, and from 1956 to 1966 he and his mother, Elsie, wrote letters back and forth with the poet.
  • Pound's visit in 1958Pound left St. Elizabeths Hospital in 1958, and on his way back to Italy he paused at the Gatters' house. Carl asked him about growing up in Wyncote, took his picture and talked with neighbors who remembered Pound as a boy. Several of Pound's biographers later drew on Carl's photographs.
  • All Hallows Church, 1896All Hallows Church was built in 1896 and 1897. Its design came from Furness, Evans and Company, the firm started by the Philadelphia architect Frank Furness.
  • BeechwoodBeechwood ranks among the best-known stone Colonial Revival houses in Wyncote. Its design follows the style of Brognard Okie, who reconstructed Pennsbury Manor, up the Delaware River, and was the architect of Appleford in Villanova.
  • A one-of-a-kind seminaryThe Reconstructionist Rabbinical College is in Wyncote. It is the only seminary affiliated with Reconstructionist Judaism.
